"Miss, are we cooking today?": using the context of kiwifruit jam making to develop understanding of Nature of Technology and Tech knowledge
Wendy Slatter
Abstract
We all know that cooking grabs our students' attention. How can we use this activity to develop an understanding of the NOT and Tech Knowledge?
Rather than using this activity to develop tech practice this presentation will demonstrate the potential for using jam and jam making to explore these areas of the curriculum. Activities to develop these understandings will be presented and discussed as well as providing an opportunity for you to discuss the issues of being a foods teacher when faced with the choice of being a teacher of Home and Life sciences, Home Economics, Hospitality and Food Technology. Each of these roles are very important and this presentation will provide you with some teaching strategies to transfer between these roles.
Intended Audience
Teachers of foods based programmes.
Technology teachers looking for strategies to develop NOT and technological knowledge understandings within their programmes.
