Day 3 - Thursday 8th October

8.30am

The Development of Technology in New Zealand

Cliff Harwood

Cliff Harwood will offer an overview of the development of technology education into the New Zealand curriculum at the TENZ 2009 Conference. His presentation will discuss the ideologies and learning theories that underpinned technical education, as it was previously offered in New Zealand schools, and compare and contrast these with current learning theories and ideologies that currently underpin technology education, as it is defined in the 2007 New Zealand Curriculum. He will draw on examples of teacher pedagogical practices and student outcomes, to illustrate how such ideologies have evolved and been transformed into opportunities for student learning. A focus of Cliff's presentation will be on connecting the intentions of the technology curriculum, to the learning needs of students to ensure that they develop a technological literacy that enables them to participate in, and contribute within a technologically enabled society.

Cliff has had a long and active involvement in technology education; he has worked as a classroom teacher, as an adviser to schools in technology and graphics, and as a researcher for the development and implementation of the current technology curriculum. Cliff is presently employed on contract to the Ministry of Education as the National Technology Professional Development Manager.  He was the first recipient of the TENZ Outstanding Contribution to Technology Education Award in 2005, for his contributions to technology and in particular the development and implementation of qualifications for senior secondary schooling in technology.
