Biotechnology Learning Hub logoNew Zealand Biotechnology Learning Hub

www.biotechlearn.org.nz

The Biotechnology Learning Hub aims to make modern biotechnology in New Zealand more accessible to school students and teachers. Since 2005, the Hub has been raising awareness of biotechnology practice and providing opportunities for students to engage with current research and emerging technologies. On the Hub you'll find in-depth examples of biotechnology research in action, including focus stories on Taewa (Māori potatoes), Fish oil in functional foods, Robotic Milking, and Honey for healing. These examples contain a mix of information sheets, teaching resources, video clips, and animations – all linking to the technology and science curricula.

The Hub presents authentic and relevant contexts for learning in Technology. The resources provide opportunities to engage with real problems and explore the ethical issues that surround modern biotechnologies. They also provide rich insights into the content and nature of technology and highlight examples of related careers.

On the Hub teachers can learn from each other by sharing their experiences and classroom resources. The Hub is managed by the School of Education, University of Waikato, and funded by the New Zealand government through the Ministry of Research, Science & Technology.

Central to our strategy are the Futureintech Ambassadors, skilled professionals who volunteer to visit classrooms and interact directly with students. By talking about their jobs, answering questions, and participating in projects, Ambassadors get students thinking about career opportunities.

Art Clay NZ Ltd logoArt Clay NZ Ltd

www.artclaynz.co.nz/

Art Clay NZ Ltd was started five years ago by Peter and Anne-Marie Grace as the sole New Zealand distributors of Art Clay Silver – a precious metal clay.

Fascinated by the process and the possibilities, Peter and Anne-Marie quit the corporate life and started this home based business which now has grown to over 30 Instructors throughout New Zealand. Anne-Marie individually trains every instructor who must complete an internationally set standard of training to become a fully certified Art Clay instructor.

Silver is recycled from the back of used film and x-rays and then mixed with an organic binding agent to make it mouldable. Working then with this "clay", the user is able to easily sculpt, create texture, file and sand their own creation, which once fired, becomes 99.9% silver.

In today's world, where everything is instant, this product fits right in – make a fine silver ring with no prior experience in only a few hours, not days.

Create your own one-of-a-kind piece that's unique to you – no mass production here!

Art Clay NZ Ltd also supplies books, tools, stones, findings and moulding solutions and, most recently, has become the NZ distributor for the Pratley Kraftex Range which includes Decopodge, antique cracking solutions, varnishes and resin.

Massey University logoMassey University

Massey University is internationally recognised for its excellence in teaching and research and is regarded as an innovative and progressive institution. For over 40 years, Massey University has been offering a Food Technology degree to meet the needs of the New Zealand food industry. The Bachelor of Food Technology Honours degree educates graduates to take a leading role in the development of food processing and manufacturing industries, with a mix of pure and applied science, engineering, business and entrepreneurial skills.

Massey Food Technology graduates are highly sought after for technical and management positions in food industries throughout New Zealand, Australia, Europe and Asia. They can be found working in companies ranging from big international businesses to small or medium sized entrepreneurial companies.

In order to nurture interest in schools in Food Science and Technology, Massey University have recently developed MUFTi (Massey University Food Technology information) experiment kits . It is intended that the new kits be a valuable teaching resource for the new Food Technology curriculum in schools.

Technology education requires the use of “practical and intellectual resources to develop products and systems”.

The range of food technology experiment kits consist of individually designed food experiments to demonstrate the role of additives in product development. Each of the individual kits focuses on a different food product and suitable additive.  Teachers can use this resource to demonstrate modelling in food.

The MUFTi Kit range will add a dimension to teaching that could entice more students to take up Food Technology as a career, ever grateful to the teacher who made an impact on their future career choice!
