Kevin Meyer, H.O.F. Technology at Otumoetai College in Tauranga

Delivering "issue driven" technology with senior students.
Exactly what starters a teacher might put on the whiteboard to get students engaged, through to project completion and the practical tricks to cope with 30 different workshop projects in one class of different year levels.

Achievement standard courses:

A teacher guide used to focus students in individual projects:

  • How to involve clients.
  • Tips to manage the diversity of projects.
  • How to extract ideas from unmotivated students.
  • Catering for students who need to catch up when ill or away with sports.
  • Multi level teaching in the same class.

Motivating students who have issues with writing, behaviour, attendance, and would perhaps leave school for work, if there was any.

  • Rewarding students for work done.
  • Careers, life coaches and goals.
  • Life skills.

Planned activities:

  • Audience work in random 4's to raise problems on how to deliver issue based technology.– this will lead on to me explaining our methods.
  • Teachers then share in specialist groups, and then to whole group, strategies that they have found effective. (Tricks of the trade).

Intended audience

Applicable to all.
