Christchurch is situated in the South Island. Christchurch is the
heart of Canterbury and is widely known as the Garden City. The
city was founded by Church of England settlers in 1850, arriving
on the ‘first four ships’. The heritage of Christchurch
can be seen in the neo-Gothic stone architecture, the parks and
street names of the central city.
While built on the primary production from the extensive Canterbury
Plains, Christchurch is now a much diversified economy. Close to
the sea and bordered by the Southern Alps the plains are sliced
by a number of pristine rivers.
