Membership Report
Attracting and maintaining memberships is a crucial function of subject associations.
In the last few years TENZ has strengthened its foundation and activities, supported by the IPENZ structure and team. With the able guidance of our TENZ chairperson Wendy Fox-Turnball, the regional TENZ groups have been reenergised.
Having Fiona McLean at IPENZ maintaining our TENZ membership database and relaying monthly membership reports, has resulted in an improved system for tracking and analysing our memberships.
In 2009 we have seen a steady increase in the total memberships from:
- 523 in March to 678 in September

I represented TENZ at the PPTA Subject Association Forum in April this year. This is an opportuntiy where the subject associations can build relationships and address key issues that impact on all. One of the key areas discussed was membership and the challenges involved persuading educators of the benefits of belonging to a subject association.
We have been working on a range of strategies to deal with these challenges such as developing a promotional pamplet, and improving the content and links of the TENZ website. We also clarified procedures for following up on unpaid fees whist encouraging continued membership and ways of updating changes in contact person. We looked at coordinating this nationally and utilising the regional coordinator connections.
We are continuing to membership marketing strategies on issues such as how to reach more primary teachers and other propestive members by creating promotional pack for events such as principals’ conferences,Tech Team solutions and ministry workshops, tertiary teacher training programmes. Also working on other initiatives such as articles on TENZ in NZEI, PPTA, the gazzette and relevant industry publications.
